Mainly because you were initially trying to convert peacefully and you turned it into a bloodbath. In other words you got yourself into this mess!
However, you are still one of the faithful and wouldn't be completely abandoned. Just before the priests begin to attack you, a barrier goes up. They are unable to hit you. You try to take advantage of this only to find that your barrier is broken against anyone you attack!
Still this at least allows you to fight them one at a time. There are 4 of them all with the same stats.
