Hall of Infinite Doors

Soon he began seeing signs and messages written on the walls with warnings. "Turn back now!", "Stop while you can!", "DANGER!", "Trespassers will be punished!", and others were written in a dark red color on the cool surfaces of the walls. The further he rode, the more frequent the signs. He almost laughed when he saw police tape draped from the walls.

If he took his eyes off the walls and looked where he was headed, he could see a small piece of land. Both walls curved in to surround the island, so it seemed it was the only place to go. He wondered what time the farmer and the family woke up. He would have to make this a very quick trip if he was to make it back unnoticed. A brief glance at his watch revealed it was 4:07.

John sighed and averted his eyes from what was on the island. He wanted it to be a surprise for when he landed. He started to question himself, though. Was it really his business? Hadn't the family done enough for him that he could respect their simple request? What if they caught him?

Somehow the possibility of being caught made him more eager to do the deed. He had always been the kid who did exactly what you told him not to do and being in a work-free environment seemed to have stimulated that part of his persona. One time he had been told directly not to pull the fire alarm by one of his teachers in school. He hadn't been planning on it, but the teacher told him not to, so he grabbed the handle and yanked. The whole school was evacuated. It resulted in many detentions.

The small boat slowed as it hit land, and the sides and bottom grinded against the sands of the small land form. He sat for a few seconds to catch his breath from his paddling and felt the ache now that resided from shoveling manure the day before.
