Hall of Infinite Doors
John stood in the middle of the boat and hopped out in a small leap, landing neatly with both feet on the ground. His eyes traveled from the sand at his feet to a cage in front of him. He blinked unconsciously. There was something very blue in the cage. Something large and blue. The cage itself was a rusted metal of some sort. Its rusted state was most likely the result of the water in the air.
The cage was nearly as wide as an SUV is long and the bars extended vertically from a metal plate on the ground to one several yards in the air. The bars were spaced evenly with about an inch and a half between them, and were nearly an inch in diameter. As a whole, the cage seemed very sturdy and seemed especially massive on the small island.
It interested him that they would have a cage on an island, through an underground water passage, with an underground beach, through a tunnel protected by boards and nails. But what really interested him was the contents of this well-hidden cage. Whatever it was, it moved up and down very gently and regularly, with a pattern that seemed familiar. John rounded the cage in the attempt to identify it, but before he could finish his path, a sign tipped him off.
The sign read, "DO NOT TOUCH THE BLUE MONKEY!"
Taken aback, John reread the contents of the sign, but his eyes were not fooling him. The sign really told him not to touch the blue monkey. It made sense, almost. If that blue thing in the cage where a monkey, and it were curled up and sleeping, it would explain the motions he saw.
Quietly, he sneaked around the cage. Sure enough, under the mass of blue fur, he saw a monkey's face. He had never seen anything like this before. He had watched plenty of environmental movies in school and on the History Channel, but never once did he see anything like this. There must be money in this, he thought. If only he had his cell phone, he could take a picture of it, he knew.
