Lost in a Good Book- A Child's Tale

Rebecca closed the book. There would be no safe explanation this time. She knew as she watched her brother storm towards her. He was furious, it poured off of him like rain in a great storm. Rebecca slipped out of her chair.

"Where have you been?" he hissed at her, grabbing her arm much too tightly. She was about to protest, when she saw her mother. Instead, she grabbed the bag off the floor and stumbled to keep up with Marc's pace. "I found her."

In a preemptive gesture- which is to say before the attacks on her could begin Rebecca shut her mind to the words. She was aware of a library worker asking them to quiet down, and her mother's too loud response. She felt ashamed standing in that place of knowledge with her mother being unreasonable. She was also afraid they would tell her not to come back.

The night didn't get any better. Rebecca sat in her room listening to the volley of shouts. Marc had apparently decided he had had enough. He threatened to go live with their father. Mother told him he should try, but that no one wanted him. Rebecca tried to block it all out. Deep down her mother didn't mean the things she was saying. Deep down mother loved them, as did her father. She tried desperately to convince herself of that fact. In the end she just fell asleep with her head tucked under her pillow.
