The Island of Destiny

After a couple hours walking west you finally come to an open space and without any trees blocking your view, you can finally see the mountains of the island looming ahead of you. Oh no! That means that you went in the totally opposite way than you should have. By your estimate if you go back now, you won't make it back to the beach until nightfall. What should you do?
