Much of Nothing
You look at Dan and note the weariness in his eyes. He is lying. He very much cares whether you continue on or not. You decide to side with him. Not only that, but your feet hurt too.
"We should probably turn back," You say. "This trail is only going to get worse and the last thing we need is Dan falling down and breaking a bone or something."
"I'm sick of walking, yeah," Dan responds; "But I'm not going to just fall down, asshole."
"Yeah right," You say; "Your fat ass is clumsy as hell."
"Fuck you," He says. But he does not argue further.
Terri looks disappointed in you and shakes her head a little before shrugging her shoulder. "Alright," She says. "If you don't want to continue on then I'm not going to make you."
Dan is visibly relieved and turns immediately around to head back down the trail. Smiling, you fall into step behind him and hear Terri following as well.
The three of you stop at the waterfall and stare at the mediocre attraction. There is a long period of silence where all of you stare into the trickle of water and rest your weight on the rail.
"Looks like the hill is pissing into a fucking puddle," Dan comments.
"It is pretty much the most pitiful waterfall I've ever seen," Terri admits.
After another long period of silence Terri asks if you guys are ready to start hiking back again. Dan and you reluctantly agree and the three of you soon continue along the trail, heading back to the car along the uneven and difficult trail. Your feet occasionaly catch a root and your knee occasionaly buckles on an unexpected dip in the trail.
It doesn't take long for your legs to ache again and your feet to go numb. As expected, Dan complains loudly of his discomfort, but continues to lead the three of you back to the car. It takes a lot of self control for you not to complain right along with him. Terri remains ever silent and maintains a steady pace that matches what Dan is setting, frequent stops for complaints included.
The trail takes a sudden turn and Dan disappears around it. You follow the bend to run into the back of him. He stands very still and you look over his shoulder to see the cause of her suddent halt.
A brown bear stares at the three of you. He stands in the middle of the path. You think he looks hungry, but tell yourself that it's just your fear of the animal that makes you think so.
Terri seems indecisive at this moment and Dan is to much of a blundering fool for you to bother consulting with him. Looks like the choice is up to you.
