Heart of an Assassin
The more you stare at the apparent smoke rising some distance in front of you, the more certain you are that it is fire.
Abruptly, you whirl round and run back to the marketplace, ignoring the basket that has fallen from your hands. "FIRE!" you scream to anyone who will listen.
Mrs. Tomoe grabs you by the arms. "Karone, calm down!" she orders you. "What makes you think that there's a fire?"
"I saw smoke," you blurt out, trembling violently. "It's rising in the distance, coming from the direction of my house!"
"If it *is* a fire, then we need to stop it spreading," one of the men who has gathered says.
"What about my family?" you demand, your voice rising to an almost-hysterical shriek.
"I'm sure they'll be fine," Mrs. Tomoe tries to reassure you in a soothing voice. "They'll have got out of the house, and will probably be on their way here."
"Let's go," one of the other men says shortly.
You follow the crowd to your house.
