The Item

Perhaps not a wise choice, because you're going to have to tell King Elam not only did you not finish the task, but you took the weapon in question to his very palace. Nevertheless, you head for the city, the Item at your side.

"Where are we going?" she queries.

"To Gerard, my home. There is a man I want you to meet there," you respond, hoping that Elam will not kill the Item and you at first sight. "Hey, what's your name?" You ask this question thinking that you might have to adopt the Item.

"I'm Faern. I'm hungry," she says simply. You give her some wild berries and continue.

After three days you come before Elam. He shuts his eyes in anguish when he sees you and a girl coming before him. You begin the conversation thus:

"Elam, my king, I apologize, but I have failed. You see, this girl, Faern, is actually-"

"Silence!" Elam shouts. Usually this is not Elam's tone with you, as you are one of the few he truly confides in. "I know what Faern is. You have failed. And now we shall all perish because of it."

"You knew?!" you gasp. He knew what you were going to kill!

"Yes. I thought you had resolve enough, but I guess I was wrong. Or was I? Kill her now, and I will absolve you of all crimes you commited against my kingdom in not killing her before." He hands you a knife. It is made of steel. Cold steel, your only friend.

The Item sobbs pitifully and wraps her arms around your legs. "Don't!" she cries.

"It looks like she sees you as a father figure," Elam remarks. "That must end."

I must kill her, you think. No! Elam's sick, twisted game must end! He must die!
