The Black Citadel

You follow the path into a large clearing. There are two L-shaped poles with cages suspended from chains here that are empty. To the side of the cages are three large dark figures about seven foot tall, dressed in black robes. You cannot make out any features to determine if they're human or not. Their heads are lowered and they are whispering with each other. There are three other paths that exit the clearing here, but you can't get past without confronting the figures. What should you do?
