A Buff's Tale
You hop into the mobile VFA, moving a few tapes to the side as you sit down. Is there room in here for popcorn? You decide you'll be able to put it in your lap as you drive home. You get out of the car at the grocery store and start walking towards the front doors. You've got the route memorized. Right, left, right, down Aisle 13, near the very end. That's where the huge bags of popcorn are.
You enter the doors and begin making your way to the popcorn. To your surprise, someone else is already there.
They turn and look at you anxiously. "Mister? Do you have any idea what type of popcorn I should get?"
You smile and happily share your expertise. "You can't go wrong with Orville Redenbacher. Pop Secret is some of the best I've found as well. But if you want my movie buff's secret? Go for the big bag. It's much less expensive than the rest, and it's already popped. Over time, you'll save lots of time and money that you can use for movies."
"Gee, thanks!" says the person. "Do you happen to have any recommendations for a movie to watch tonight? It's so hard to know these days, which movies are good and which are bad..."
You're happy to correct them. "Actually, we're living in sort of a golden age of movies. Most movies are good. But if you want a great movie to watch, I recommend..." You reach into your back pocket. You always keep a tape there, just for situations like these. "Try this one. I think you're gonna like it."
"D- Doonby? I've never heard of this!" said the curious individual.
"It stars Joe Estevez, a great personal friend of mine. I actually had this tape made myself. It's 106 minutes long, and from 2013, after they stopped making VHSs, so I had to record it onto that tape. You keep it safe, and maybe one day you'll have a collection like mine."
"Thank you!" said the person.
"I'm happy to help. When you're a movie expert, this is what you do." You grab a large bag of popcorn and walk away, happy that you could shepherd a lost soul in need of guidance. You check out at the register, and head back home with the popcorn on your lap.
You finally arrive at home. The VFA. You push the door open to the inviting blue glow of the TV. You set down the bag of popcorn beside your chair and go to your shelf to select your first movie of the night. Three stick out to you. Which will you watch?
