In Love With an Aven

“I think I’ll stay just so we can be sure” You tell him. He nods respectfully and leads you back to your room.
He opens the door and you find Violet tucked in the corner behind the desk. “It hurts baby.” She sobs and clenches a fist around her stomach. “It hurts!” She gasps, her eyes wide. The ward remains in the doorway as you approach her.
“What’s wrong Violet?” You ask gently.
“Who’s Violet?” She groans, pain still in her eyes as she looks up at you pleadingly.
“I think somethings wrong.” You tell the man and he comes to the corner, leaning over her gently. “Ma’am are you okay?” He asks. She shakes her head slightly.
“What’s wrong?” He asks.
“Why does it hurt?” She responds, fear in her eyes.
“What hurts?” He asks her gently.
“My stomach!” She gasps, “My stomach is stabbing me!” She rubs her pregnant stomach anxiously.
“I think your wait is up.” You tell him, and he looks up, confused. “Better prepare the delivery room.”
Understanding dawns in his eyes and he runs out of the room to get the delivery staff.
“What’s being delivered?” She whispers in fear.
“A baby. A beautiful little baby.” You squeeze her arm tenderly.
“Whose baby?”
“Yours.” You tell her and she squints, confused.
“I don’t have a baby.” She tells you as you grab a comb off the table.
“You will soon.” You tell her, gently brushing her hair.
“Will it hurt?” She asks you, frightened.
“Yes, very much.” You tell her truthfully and she sobs slightly in fear, “but it will end and you will have a beautiful little baby.”
She nods slightly as you finish combing out her hair. You realize that she would be beautiful were she not in an insane asylum uniform. You squeeze her arm reassuringly and she nods.
“What’s your name?” She asks you suddenly.
“Emma.” You tell her for the second time.
“I’ll do it for you Emma.” You smile sadly and she hugs you, sobbing.
“The hurt is coming back.” She tells you as you lift her onto the bed and she lays her head in your lap, clenching the sheets in her fist.
“I know.” You respond, stroking her hair, “but it will be okay.”
“Because I will have a baby when it’s over.” She responds. The nurses arrive with a stretcher before you can respond.
