You begin to doubt the effectiveness of your comforting technique. However, as you raise your hand and turn to walk away she uncovers her eyes and gives you a small smile, thanking you quietly with her reddened, tear-stained eyes. You don't think she knew any of these people personally, so you have reason to believe its the nearly physical stench that is causing her eyes to water.
