I was about 9 when I met Rose. It was summer, which meant only faint drizzles of rain on Arkanis and the unusual sun ray probing through the dark skies. One would question how we even survived in that type of weather, but we lived as well as any habitable planet.

Brendol was asleep, from either actual tiresome work or the third bottle of rum for the day, I wasn't sure. That meant that my father and I had the privilege to breathe easily into our own apartment. I could read and watch the things I wanted to on our worn leather sofa and dad could take the 'death sticks' out of the pantry and smoke while reading the newspaper. Once or twice a woman would come by when we had the apartment for ourselves.

Her name was Phasma. I didn't know whether that was her first or last name and as a enrolling cadet for the Academy that faithful summer I didn't have much time to investigate. She was from Parnassos, a planet I still haven't visited. From the small quips of talk I could hear when they had caf together, I picked up a little information about her: she was a Captain of the rising First Order under my grandfather's command, she was in the Scyre clan before betraying her brother to leave the nuclear-ridden world she lived in before, she was conspiring against Brendol with my father and she had a daughter.

I still haven't asked Rose about her father. I tend to skip over that part with her because I have figured it is a tough topic on her as much as it is for me to talk about my mother. We were both raised in army families, with military being our highest priority and that meant we weren't allowed to be children like the rest of the humans who were raised without involvement in the First Order or Resistance.

I was sitting on the couch while reorganizing some of the files I needed for enrollment into the Arkanis Academy, skimming through the physical check-up report they had sent to my father earlier that morning. Armitage had already told me that Phasma would be visiting, but he never stated she would be bringing her daughter with her. He was busy when the mahogany door creaked open, showing an armour clad woman and a smaller, darkly dressed girl next to her. I straightened up and left the files away, biting on the inside of my cheek.

I was always awkward around the Captain. She was too tall and too broad for me, I didn't understand how a woman so menacing could be my father's best friend. I later realized that my father was not the soft spoken, calm man he presented himself in front of me. He was cold and bitter with the rest of the Galaxy, I suppose that is the way the Hux's masked their true selves from the world. Phasma was nothing short of the same cloth; she was angry and cruel with the stormtroopers in her ranks and with her mutuals. With m her daughter and my father (and later, me) she was gentle and smiled much more often.

Phasma used to bring me chocolate every time she came over, which was rare. She knew that we were mostly poor because of Brendol's spending habits and stupid spending sprees on his spaceships and 'cadets', so getting a bar of chocolate from Coruscant was like the gates of heaven opening to take me in. She always seemed to slide it to me very conspicuously and I never understood why, not until I met Rose.

Phasma gave me a large bar of milk filled chocolate straight from one of the finest factories in Tython (everyone knew the Deep Core worlds were the richest and even the food tasted rich) and leaned over to whisper to me, as Rose was lead by my father to the small table in the living room. "She has a very bad sweet tooth. Be a dear and don't share, I'm trying to take the habit out of her."

I didn't understand. Why was it such a bad thing? I saw that the girl saw the chocolate and I was fairly sure Phasma wasn't lying; the look she gave me was almost pitiful.

Phasma and my dad left towards the closed off kitchen (probably to speak of the attempt on Brendol's life so we don't hear) and left us alone to get to know each other.

Rose was nothing short of her mother, and I had never seen a taller 10 year old in my life. Most of her eyes were obscured by the long bangs that she stubbornly pushed away every other minute. She was watchful and careful, but also very poised. She sat straight and her hands were on her lap the entire time we talked. Her clothes were incredibly pressed to the spot, charcoal grey and contrasting her pale complexion. There were white stripes on her sleeves which I had seen before only on my father's uniform, and the uniforms of Generals that came out of our Academy. I learned, later, that she was wearing an Academy uniform and that I was blind because I had been reading about them for about three days straight beforehand.

Rose stared at me when I was setting the chocolate away, pushing away the bangs from her eyes. She didn't say anything, but I knew what she meant. I would feel awful if I didn't share it, but I would be in trouble and betraying Phasma's trust if we were caught.
