Just an Ordinary Day in the Life of an Ordinary Girl

You put all your energy into faking a great self-confidence and say, "Alright, the beach it is!"

The beach is only an hour away and the sun reaches its highest point in the sky at the time you arrive there. Luckily you brought a picknick basket filled with some cool drinks, crisps and biscuits. It turned out to be quite convenient that you had actually packed for two. Gerry, your best friend, had canceled the beach plans at the last moment. You were usually not the kind of person to decide to go by yourself then, but today you had just felt the urge to go, despite of Gerry canceling. Maybe you subconsciously knew something would happen that you wouldn't want to miss, like meeting a total stranger and taking him with you to the beach.
You laugh at yourself. You just don't cease to amaze yourself. You'd always thought it was nothing like you to pick up hitch-hikers, let alone going on a date with one.

You suddenly realize what you were just thinking to yourself. Can you call this a date?

In the meanwhile the two of you have found a spot in the warm sand. It is not as busy as you'd expected. But you can blame that on the fact that the place is kind of hard to find. You wouldn't have noticed other people anyway. You are having lively conversations with Zack, who seems to open up to you more and more, although he still doesn't tell you much about himself. It's so hard to figure this guy out, but that's what makes him so interesting to you. The words 'curse' and 'Elmrow' don't even come up again, which suits you just fine.

After a while you feel like doing something else. You've never been the kind of person who likes sunbathing all day long. Sitting still is not your style, so you gladly say yes when Zack suggests to take a dive.
"Hey, I didn't bring my bikini for nothing," you say. "Wanna race for it?"

Zack looks at you in surprise, then grins, takes off his shoes and shirt and says, "Go ahead, I'm gonna give you a head-start."
"Oh no, I'm not gonna need it," you say mysteriously. "On your mark, GO!"

While Zack flies off, you wait a short moment and then make the pursuit. Although you're a bit out of shape you still manage to reach the ocean first, and wait for Zack with a big smile of your face. "Hey, that's not fair!" he cries out. "What are you, superwoman?"
"Nah, just the best sprinter of the athletics team at home," you reply with a wink.
"Cool, you do athletics," Zack says admiring, then, unexpectedly, pushes you into the water, runs further into the sea and dives in himself.

The water is cool, maybe a bit too cool still, in this early spring, but you're having a good time anyway.
You are splashing around a bit - as is Zack, probably, but you can't see him anywhere - when suddenly you feel something grab your feet and pull you under the surface. You try to kick up as hard as you can to get your head above the water, but it's no use and in your panic you only get disorientated. You feel how a strong force is still pulling your body in a certain direction and you suddenly feel a fierce pain in your arm. Rocks! There are sharp rocks underneath the water surface! In the meantime your lungs are crying out for oxygen. The pressure is almost unbearable. This is it, you think to yourself. This is the curse. No, this can't be it! I don't wanna die!

You have only one chance. You have to swim as hard as you can in the right direction. The problem is that you don't know which is up and which is down anymore.
You have to take your chances. There's a light area and a dark one. Which will save your life?
