A Day in the Life

You connect with Sorenson and see the typical wait screen as it connects with an interpreter. Within a few seconds, an interpreter has popped up on the screen. You and the interpreter are able to see each other through a webcam and the interpreter is able to see you through a webcam on her end. She will hear your mom through a headset she is wearing and interpret what she says.

"Thank you for choosing Sorenson Communications can I go ahead and place your call?" The interpreter signs to you.

You have already typed your mom's number into the program. The interpreter can see the number on her keypad and can simply click "CALL" when you are ready.

You sign back, "YES ME CALL MY MOM" You smile and shrug slightly in a "no biggie" kind of way.

The interpreter smiles tightly and places the call.

*Ring* *Ring* The interpreter interprets how many rings until your mom answers the phone. Then the interpreter signs, "WOMAN VOICE HELLO?"

"Hi mom!" you sign back, "I was just calling to catch up with you for a minute."

The interpreter voices your message to your mom then signs "BACKGROUND DOG BARKING"

"Oh say hello to Bandit for me!!" your heart melts thinking about your dog still living back home with your parents.

"Hi hun!" your mom says, "yes, that's Bandit! He's been barking all afternoon!"
The interpreter mirrors the exasperation in your mom's voice through facial expressions and envisioning your mom's loving frustration with Bandit makes you laugh.

The interpreter interprets well and you are able to catch up with your mom, filling her in on what is going on at work and in life. At times, a VRS calls include lag time of interpreting. It seemed to take a little longer when you first started making VRS phone calls. Now that you are well-versed in the ways of VRS, phone calls are basically without hassle and very convenient.

You continue chatting and then see the interpreter indicate that there was the sound of a doorbell in the background.
"Just a minute, hon! Gotta grab the door!" your mom says and the interpreter interprets. The line falls silent as your mom goes to answer the door. At first you sit quietly, then strike up a conversation with the interpreter.

You sign, "so, interpreter, how is your day going?"
"GOOD THANK YOU," the interpreter signs back.
"GOOD" you sign back.

"Hun?" your mom is back on. "Can I call you back? It's the neighbor and they need a minute of my time."
"No worries, mom!" I am going out with some new friends so we will have to talk tomorrow instead."
"Well, I hope you have fun sweetie. I want to hear about these new friends tomorrow!"
"Sure, Bye Mom!" you sign.
You mom ends the call and you wave at the interpreter and sign "THANK YOU!"
"THANK FOR CHOOSE SORENSON COMMUNICATIONS," she signs back.

You close the laptop and feel a little better about going out after talking to your mom.
