Bernice stayed where she was hidden, waiting for orders from Alex. She watched him look back and forth between her, Morgan, and David. After another few seconds, his voice came through the comm. links in her helmet.
"Alright everybody, I want David and Morgan to go to the left and circle around behind the squads. Bernice and I will head to the right. Ready? Move!" Bernice rolled from her spot, stood, and began sprinting up the hill as fast as she could move. Her motion tracker showed that she was getting closer to the soldiers, and that Alex was slowly falling behind her, so she stopped at a tree and put her back against it. Alex came up, slid down behind a fallen log, and looked around. Bernice crept over to him.
"What now?" she asked quietly, looking over the log into the forest around them.
"I don't know, give me a second," Alex looked up to the stars for a moment, apparently thinking of what they could do next, when the silence was broken by a CEL soldier's shouting.
"I've got a ship!" he yelled, his voice echoing through the forest. The sounds Finally, they circled around the movement of the soldiers and stopped at a fallen tree to further their tactics.
"What now?" Bernice asked resting her back against the tree. Alex shook his head.
"I don't know. Give me a second." There was a long pause, and Alex could just hear the CEL soldiers moving through the trees. He manually turned his InfraVision off and looked up at the stars, thinking of more tactics.
"I've got a ship!" a soldier yelled in the distance. There were shouts of excitement, and a few gunshots cut through the air.
"Oh my god, I can't believe I was so stupid," Alex suddenly said. "If we had moved, we might have been seen, but the ship acted as a decoy. The squads will probably radio back to their command, then come back up. Now's our chance to get into the base and find the Director!"
"Hmmm...looks like your slow thinking finally helped instead of making me do it for you," Bernice said with a hint of satisfaction in her tone.
"Thanks," Alex said as sarcastically as possible. Bernice just shook her head. Alex sighed, then radioed David and Morgan. "Hey people, we've got a good window of time to get to the base from here. It's still another quarter mile or so, but we can make it if we hurry. Bernice, take the front, tell us if you see anything. I'll be right behind her. Morgan, cover both of us. David, you get to make sure no one shoots bullets up our asses."
"Moving now," Morgan said.
"Why the hell do I always have to do this?" David complained as he moved into position.
"You piss me off," came his response. Bernice smiled and ran up to her position.
The team covered the quarter mile in thirty seconds, running full speed up the hill. At the top, the tree cover ended abruptly in a trench.
"Morgan, check it out," Alex said quietly. She moved up, crouched, and scoped out the area.
"I've got two lookouts on the towers closest to us, and three guards at a side entrance to the left," she said. "Orders?"
