A Tale of Two Choices

"You thief. Get out." With this Mr Trystell physically lifted Dorothea and bundled her out of the front door of the workhouse.

Dorothea wept. Whilst the workhouse was a terrible place, at least it provided shelter and sustenance. Without family, Dorothea had no-one to turn to and nowhere to go.

Dorothea walked slowly away from the workhouse in an unknown direction, not paying attention to where she was going, not being able to see through her tears.

As she stepped into the road, she heard the frightened whinny of a horse, the clatter of wheels on cobbled stones and the splinter of wood. Dorothea briefly was aware of a huge object slamming into her and then lost conciousness.
