Reach
The stretch of uncomfortable silence gives you an uneasy feeling as the the three of you continue to work on your homework. Something about the situation makes you feel like you’re intruding or causing the awkward aura. Soon enough, you can’t take it any longer.
“Um, I’m going to get going, I completely forgot that I have to turn in a paper online and my laptop is at home.” You say, hoping the excuse is believable, “I’ll see you guys later.”
Ari gives you a glum gaze, “oh okay… good luck.”
“It was nice meeting you.” River grins, before waving.
“Likewise, and thanks.” You say before packing your things and sauntering back to your apartment.
Thus began the constant avoidance of the two. Ari invited you to multiple hangouts, which all included River joining in. You always found a way to either take a raincheck and have something suddenly come up, or say you have other plans. Something each time held you back, and the widening gap between you and Ari would continue to grow wider and wider, but you felt powerless. You didn’t know why you began to avoid them, and you hated yourself for it.
Maybe it was fear, you thought.
Fear of losing Ari to some else. Them realizing that he was more than you could ever be.
So when you saw Ari and River inside the cafe you and Ari would go too since high school to vent, closer then what was labeled as friends, your tightening throat seems unjustified.
