The Door

Bradley enters the mine car, sudden fear clutching at his throat.

He barely settles in when the car jerks forward. He finds himself hurtling through narrow trackways at break-neck speed.

He hangs on for dear life, fearing that every little jar or bump would fling him from the safety of the car and onto the tracks.

After what seems an eternity the mine car comes to a screeching halt.

Bradley quickly exits the car and looks around his new surroundings.

He sees the tunnel in front of the tracks stretching far into the darkness. At first it appears to be the only way out. As he stands there he feels a cold draft come from above his head.

Bradley looks up and sees an opening in the wall. However, reaching it means climbing up the rock wall.

He contemplates his choices. As he stands there thinking he sees something materialize out of the darkness.

"So Bradley, which way will it be?" the figure asks. "One way is almost certain death and the other a chance for life."

This figure seems strangely benign in spite of it's sinister appearance.

Bradley decides to speak.

"Which way would you advise?" Bradley asks.

"That I cannot answer for only you can make the right choice for you. But I will say that the more you are willing to suffer to attain something the more worthwhile it will be, in most cases." replied the figure.

With that it disappeared back into the darkness.
