The Big 1

The gang of five (not six, five) head up the stairs to the 10th floor. The stairs creak and groan as they are stepped on. Every now and then one collapses and the hand rail is put to good use.

Eventually, the group come to a batterd old wooden door, hanging off its hinges. David pushes it, and it falls over. A loud squeak is heard, followed by a large ammount of shuffling. They go in to investigate.

In the corner of a room, wearing a battered old jacked, torn jeans and a shoe, is a young man of about 19. He has a short beard and dark, matted hair. He looks like a hobo, yet somehow seems as though he doesn't deserve the life he lives. A hint of intelligence can be seen on his handsome, yet grubby, face.

"No! Please! D-don't hurt me..." he whimpers and curls up in a little ball.

"Don't worry," says Charles, "we have no need to hurt anyone. Except those damn undertakers."

The man seems to relax a bit, but he doesn't come out of his little ball. Sandy walks towards him.

"Come on," she says, "I'll help you up. As she walks towards him, he shuffles further and further away. "I won't hurt you," says Sandy, and she puts on her best "trust-me-I'm-telling-the-truth-" smile.

He eventually gives in, and using Sandy's help, get's up.

"My name's Mark," he says. "Mark Jones." Everyone introduces themselves.

"What are you doing up here?" asks Cullen.

"Looking for food," he replies. "I had just been evicted from my home when the earthquake struck. I managed to find a shelter, but I nearly got crushed by pieces of falling debris. I have no idea where any of my family is, or if they are still alive. I'm her looking for food. I can't find anything anywhere, and as a result I haven't eaten in days."

Mark joins the group.
