Quest oNe

"Thank you," the sorcerer says.

He settles down in a shadow and you can only barely make out his outline. Thinking the least you could do for him is offer him something warm to eat you pass him a plate of food.

"Thanks," he says as he reaches for it around the fire. As he moves into the light you catch a glimpse of his face. He is hardly the same sorcerer Ulius you first saw. Sitting before you reaching for the plate is a young man, maybe three or four years older than you. The only resemblance between this young man and the aged man from before are his crystal clear, deep blue eyes, still sparkling with live energy.

You quickly draw your hand back and wonder where to begin with inquiries of his change. You let a small gasp escape and he looks over at you. "I'm sorry for the abrupt change," he says, "but I find it quite easier to travel as an aged man. You run into a lot less trouble. And far fewer people ask favors of you." He turns back to his food while you think over what he has said.

After a few moments you are bold enough to ask a question. "UmÂ….so is this your true form or yet another guise?" you ask.

He looks up, slowly, and regards you for a moment with his penetrating eyes. "This is my true form," he says, "I have no wish to deceive you, for although I am a powerful sorcerer, I am not all knowing, I had no previous knowledge of our meeting so I had no idea that I should travel in my true form, for if I had known we would meet, I would have traveled as I am now, so as not to deceive you."

You are taken aback by his words and as he rises to clean his plate you remain where you are, silent and thoughtful. He returns and settles down next to the thick tree trunk. "You are bound for Castle Winthia, are you not?" he asks.

Deciding you can trust this man you reply, "Yes."

"If you don't mind I would like to accompany you. I can already tell you are a very independent person, and I do realize my company might not be appreciated but I feel that you and I would do well by each other. The commanding presence of courage about you and your lack of fear leads me to believe you are not one to be trifled with. Yet I wish I could travel with you to aid you on your journey. I sense you are not happy with your life. You seek more adventure and change. I am too seeking a change in life and I feel that if I went with you we would find some grand adventure."
