The Story of A Chinese-American (ACWM)
Making your way to the East Coast, you manage to find work at a large Southern plantation assisting the owner. Though garnering only a small pay, you note that at least you are not treated as harshly as the Negro sharecroppers, who are often accused of stealing merchandise and failing to pay interest for their land. Indeed, the plantation owner is not quite sure how to react to you as a Chinese man, but he admires your work ethic and honesty, so he soon puts you in charge of collecting interest from the sharecroppers. Continuing in this fashion for several years, in 1861 you hear word that the Southern states are defending their independence from the Northern states. Owing your livelihood to the South, you consider joining the Confederate Army.
Do you stay at the plantation or join the Confederate Army?
