In a rush of panic you turned and ran, but in your hurry you dropped the only protection you had. The beast was closing in faster and you knew there was no hope of recovering the fallen gun, so you just ran faster into the darkness.

You had no time for regrets or deliberating with yourself on how you could have done this differently, all that mattered now was running.

You can hear those hands pounding the pavement struggling to keep up with your nimble legs, as you pass several buildings and see an abandoned house to the far right, and to your left a graveyard.
