Beautiful Melody
Before walking out of my bedroom, I grabbed my camera, cell phone, keys, id and what little money I had. I quietly closed my door and locked it. We slowly tip toed to the stairs, hearing music coming from the study, we scurried down the stairs to the kitchen.
Mom looked up from the kitchen table, where she had been crying, when we entered the room. I averted my eyes, I never could stand looking into her puffy red eyes or seeing the new bruises on her face. I turned towards the door, pushing my sisters in front of me. Nancy pulled the door open and stepped out Cassie following. "Where are you three off to in the rain?" mom questioned in her most commanding voice. I paused in the doorway "the park." I answered closing the door.
"Look." Nancy pointed to the house next door. A van had parked in the driveway and people were getting out. "Must be the new neighbors." I stated. We stood still, watching the strangers.
From what I could tell, it was a family of three. The woman looked almost out of place standing between the two guys, the younger in a leather jacket and ripped jeans and the older covered in tattoos, yet it was clear she was the one in control. The three of them headed towards the house, the woman and younger male exchanged a few words before they all disappeared into the house.
"They don't look like suburban people." Cassie decided. "Wonder what they do to afford a house here." Nancy remarked thoughtfully. "Like it matters," I scoffed "Are we going to the park or what?" I began walking.
