Mystic Elevator

Hi ho. Hi ho. -or- Back to the old grindstone.

You continue on to work, the full fifteen minute drive, and pull into a parking spot that is a little closer to the front than you normally are. You actually manage to laugh at one of the lame-ass skits the morning laugh crew manages to pull off. Today might not be so bad after all.

Waking up ten minutes early has it's advantages.

You step out of your car and take note of the sun rising behind the silhouetted buildings surrounding the parking lot. Normally, this would be just another reminder of how incredibly early it is. But not today. Today has a distinct and glorious beauty.

You press the button that makes your doors lock and the vehicle gives you a reassuring beep of the horn.

A yawn escapes your mouth as you start walking. You've never truly been a morning person, but jobs are hard to come by in your area, and there are bills to pay if you don't want to live with any roommates.

Another day, another dollar. Back to the old grindstone. A penny saved is a penny earned. And all the other tired cliches.

As you enter the twelve story building you let out another long yawn; the kind that leaves your jaw sore. The early bird gets the worm, you think humorlessly. It is hauntingly silent within the wide halls of the building. Your footsteps echo off of the walls as you walk.
The security guard, an older man, waves hello to you and you wave back. It's just another day at the office.

You think back on that uneasy feeling you had before you left your house. What's there to be worried about? It's going to be great! You woke up ten minutes early, for crying out loud! What could go wrong? Besides, no guts no glory. No pain no gain.

You press the up button for the elevators and step back. There are two elevators, and you aren't sure which is going to come. You find yourself waiting for quite some time before realizing that you don't hear anything moving. This building is an artifact and the elevators are relics of the past that groan like ancient giants burdened with agony whenever they move.
But there is no sound this morning. It is completely silent.

You hit the button a few more times, but to no avail. In exasperation you pound a fist on the wall and curse.
"Shit," you say after glancing at the clock on the wall. It's 6:55, and you have five minutes to get to work. In hindsight, you could have had a toaster pastry instead of the elaborate breakfast.

You walk back to the security guard and inform him of the issue.

He is a tired old man who is pleasant enough, but not anyone that you would trust your life with. You always have to talk extra loud to him, repeating yourself regularly in order for him to understand you. It's a real paint in the ass to talk to him, so you usually just avoid him.

"Hey," you say to him. "The elevators are out.

"What's that?" He says, cupping his hand to his ear.

You speak louder. "The elevators are out!"

"Yeah," he tells you. "You gotta take the stairs."

"You're kidding me," You say.

He laughs and shakes his head. "No. They're broke," he says.

"Son of a bitch," you say, throwing your hands up in the air. You make your way quickly to the back hall, where the stairs are located. Why the fuck didn't that asshole tell you? You shake your head in frustration. The guy probably has alzheimers or some shit.

You reach the bottom of the stairs and stare up at them. You aren't looking forward to the climb. You look left and then right, and your eyes settle on something new to the area.

You see an ajar pale blue door before you. In as long as you have worked in he building, you have never seen this door before. You wonder briefly how recent an addition it is. It's been a while since you've taken the stairs, but you usually take note of changes to the building.

Curiosity tightens its grip on you and you find yourself wondering what could be beyond the door. You still have five minutes, right? You aren't that far up.
