The Island of Destiny
"Come on, that pole's too risky," you tell her. "Let's explore somewhere else."
She shrugs and follows your lead as the two of you wander past the cliffs and down another stretch of beach. Judging by where the sun lays in the sky on this afternoon (which you presume it is), you think you are heading westward.
You try to strike up some conversation with Sabrina. "So what were you actually planning to do before you woke up here?" you ask her.
She shakes her head and keeps her eyes on the sand before her. "I can barely remember. It all seems so long ago...so distant."
She doesn't say anything more. The way she leaves it doesn't give you much thought for how to continue the conversation so you just glance forward and go back to your own thoughts.
"But I guess I was going to call my sister and make sure she was okay," she then says.
"Okay?" you ask.
"She got out of a bad relationship about a month ago," she explains. "Ever since then, Lisa just went...I don't know, kind of haywire. Just all over the place. First I hear from my parents that she's in Vegas for the weekend, then the next day she calls me and she's in New Orleans. She was with some random guy she just met too when she called!"
"Wow," you say. "Then what happened?"
"Well, obviously I kept in pretty close communication after that. She spent a couple more weeks travelling around when she finally crashed and burned. I think she had blown through most of her bank account. She also had lost her job in the process- shocker, so I was going to help her start to find a new one."
"I remember I woke up, made breakfast, fed my dog Ralphie, then picked up my phone to call. Then I blacked out."
She glances over at you. "What were you doing before you came to this island?"
You think about it. You realize now that you have almost no previous memory of what happened before you came here. It's all very dark, very foggy. You think long and hard. Then a memory brings itself forth in your mind...
