The Overseers

The shrill beep of an alarm jolts you awake, and you find yourself sitting upright in your bed, about to scream. But you soon realize it's six o' clock: time to wake up, eat breakfast, get ready for work. Lifeless grey walls surround you, and a door leading to the main room is on your left. The window next to your bed looks out over Los Angeles, and you stare for a moment. "Beautiful," says a thought in your mind. But you shove the thought away and the smile disappears from your face.

You stand and walk over to the dispenser in the wall, and wait. There's a light thump and the dispenser pops open like a drawer, revealing a fresh set of work clothes the same color as the walls around you. You slip them on and walk out of the sleeping room.

In the main room there's a TV installed in the wall, showing national news. A news anchor talks with delegates from the government about several protest issues over work conditions in certain factories. The government delegates simply drone on and on about nothing, just spitting out words that mean nothing, and you don't pay attention to it. The government hasn't been too kind to its people these days.

Another dispenser, located in another wall, slides open and reveals a tray of cold mushy eggs and a lumpy biscuit, plastic fork and knife included. It's not much, but it gets you through till the next meal. You chow down while staring out at the city and then put the tray back into the food dispenser, where it will be transported to an underground landfill somewhere beneath the city.

It's time to go to work.
