The Overseers

You exit the building and come out onto the street. Buses zoom down the street, headed off to factories filled with workers of all different jobs. The sidewalks are wide, about eight feet, but there's plenty of crowding due to overpopulation, making walking in the city slow and very frustrating. There's more people than usual this morning, though.

Down the street, you can see your bus stop, and lots of people are waiting. You make your way down the block, pushing past widows and their crying babies, homeless children begging for food, and many other workers trying to get to other bus stops in the vicinity. At the intersection ahead, a soldier stands guard letting groups of ten cross the street. You realize there's a huge backup, about fifteen feet away from the soldier. Your bus arrives at 6:30, and it's 6:26. You'll never make it!

Panicking, you squeeze through and try to be as polite as possible while still gaining ground towards the end of the sidewalk. You can see your bus several blocks away, coming towards you. Coming to pick up the other workers. Your heart starts to beat faster and faster, and your palms shake as you wait for traffic to open up. It's taking so long!

You stand in the front row of workers, ready to cross any minute now. This could be it. This could be the end. What if you don't get to your bus in time? What's going to happen?
As you contemplate these haunting thoughts, you feel a tug on your shoulder. You whip around and see a young man, dressed in a black coat. He has jet black hair, slicked to the side, and you can feel his eye burning through you.

"Come with me," he says, and you look down at his coat pocket, seeing a bulge and what looks like a pointed edge. A gun. The soldier waves his hand, and the workers begin to cross the street. Fear pulses through your mind, and you...
