Worlds Apart

The woman looks at the Guardian, a faint smile touching at the edges of her lips. "You heard her," she says to him.

The Guardian looks at you and it seems, for the briefest of instants, you can see disappointment in his eyes. Then, he simply turns and leaves the room, closing the door quietly behind him - although a part of you imagines he probably wants to slam it.

The woman turns her attention back to you and smiles. "That's better," she says. "I know the Guardians are supposed to be your protectors, but I don't trust any of them - and particularly not him."

You don't say anything and just look at the woman, waiting for her to continue.

The woman takes her time, though. She studies you intently for a few moments before speaking. "I'm sorry. It's just that you look so much like I did... at least before the war changed me." She shakes her head. "I almost wish this wasn't necessary, but... are you aware that there is a virus sweeping through your sisters here?"

You think back to the past few days. You could have hardly failed to notice several of your sisters coughing up blood. They've been taken by the healers and you haven't seen them since. Slowly, you nod in response to the woman's question.

"The healers have been unable to find a cure for the virus until now," the woman continues. "There's the possibility that a cure can be found elsewhere, but it requires a person to leave this facility and travel to other planets in search of the cure." She looks steadily at you. "You are different to the others. You can think for yourself. I have spoken to your tutors and they are in agreement with me. We believe you are the correct person to send to other planets - with adequate protection, of course."

You stare at the woman, hardly able to believe what you're hearing. They want you to leave your home and go into space? The thought is terrifying... but, in a way, almost exhilirating. To be picked for such a huge task...

"Of course, you have the option to say no," the woman adds. "All of us understand how scary and daunting a task like this would be."
