Shadows on Water

The path diminishes and the forest envelopes as you head steadily up the mountainside. Just as it seems the path has dwindled to nothing you emerge from the trees onto a boulder strewn flank of the mountain. A goat track winds away up. Below in the valley peaks of pine stick up through a sea of grey mist. The going is tough without horses, you are lightheaded and still a little dreamy with what you saw and heard earlier. Each of your companions wears a frown and seem to be deep in their own thoughts.

You cross a mountain glade, where flower pollen wafts in your faces, and causes Ling to have a fit of sneezing.

The path, when found again, leads down the other side of the mountain, and soon you reach the edge of the forest again. Here are the ruins of a red brick tower, built to watch over this mountain pass, but long ago abandoned. The path ends at its empty doorframe.
