Kekkaishi ~ Interlude of the Snow

Prologue Scenario Route: Night of Spring

Yuki Onna didn't trust the Kekkaishis, but she would rather trust them than go the infamous Shadow Organisation. Their reputation of being an Underworld group had spread notoriously in her many journeys. Toriyuki needed a decent family, not the life of an assassin. She could have very well ignored the Kekkaishi's offer, but the idea of both herself and Toriyuki dying didn't sound too appealing. And so against her better judgement, she accepted the deal.

"Very well, I'll accept your offer. But she has to stay with the Sumimuras. I don't trust the Shadow Organisation and I won't be joining the Kekkaishi or your troops. I do not wish to take sides in the battlefield," Yuki Onna said.

Masamori nodded. "Understood."

For a moment, both parties stood at the opposite ends, staring at each other – Frozen irises to dark pupils.

"Take care of her," Yuki Onna whispered.

Soon, her body shrank to a petite size, surrounded by white light. Her silver strands of hair turned chocolate brown, shortening to mid-length above her shoulders. Her pale skin reverted to its normal beige shade, with a hint of peach. Her white kimono now replaced by tattered, worn out pyjamas, seemingly to small for her current size.

Just as her legs gave way, Masamori rushed towards the girl, just in time to catch her in his arms.

"Got'cha," He muttered.

The little brunette's eyes agonisingly opened briefly and slowly, her lips parted in a quiver. Masamori noticed the glass irises were replaced the sky's blue hues. Before she could speak, the young girl passed out, falling limp in his arms. The Kekkaishi smiled a little as the exhausted girl slept peacefully in his arms. Her skin felt warm compared to the cold snow.

"Nice to meet you, Toriyuki Fuyuki."

Four years had passed since I became part of the Sumimura family. It took some convincing to the Family Head, who was having fishy suspicions of Masamori bringing a girl home, but Shuji-san was kind enough to treat me like his own daughter. No matter how the elderly man reprimanded Masamori, he always remained unfazed. The Yukimuras accepted me due to my circumstances, but both Heads of the families made it clear that should my Ayakashi persona attempt to run wild, they would not hesitate to terminate me. Thus, that was how I was accepted into the family.

The first days were tough at first. My body was weak after the 'transformation' and my memories and mind were still a blur. I could barely hold a pair of chopsticks properly without inflicting damage upon someone's face (or leg). Initially, I was afraid, I didn't know when my disorder would act up. The worst thing to happen would be accidentally hurting someone in the process. But my new family helped pull me through, mostly Masamori.

Usually, his visits were usually rare as he had duties to the Urakai and his Night Troops. But for some reason, he always found time to check on me, patiently listening to me whine and babble. Compared to him, I felt like a child, embarrassingly cleaning up every mistake I made whenever I was around him. Whenever I was in doubt, sad or lonely, Masamori would just smile at me, patting my head gently. Whenever he did that, this strange warmness would creep inside my belly and rise to my reddened cheeks.

"Don't worry too much, Toriyuki. See? It's been only four days and you have managed to move your toes and fingers. You're almost there! Don't give up."
Seeing his persevering attitude, my heart pounded against my chest. I resolved to recover as soon as I could.

The time I had spent with Masamori was when the days were warm as the sun, and light-hearted as spring. He always teased me like the older brother I never had. After all, Masamori was the one who taught me how to walk. I was forever indebted to him.

While he was on one of his assignments, I knew I was going to miss him. He was one of the first few people who treated me like a person.
