The sub-machine gun you just fired was a typical ion-based weapon. Ions are charged particles, and are fired through use of a psionicly charged kinetic-energy generator. both the power pack and particle clip are put into one item, and can be swapped out like a normal clip. Most Coalition smg's are ion-based, and have an effective range of about 150 meters. It is highly customizable, as are all Coalition weapons.

Your Raptor model 750 assault rifle (the one you found in your locker) fires superheated Magnesium Telluride pellets out of a magnetic accellerator, in bursts of three, or fully automatic. you have 9,000 rounds per clip, at an effective range of 300 meters. The battery powering the accelerator, and kinetic/electro-magnetic superheater is good for approximately 100,000 rounds, and can be replaced by simply swapping out the drained, general purpose power pack for a charged one.
It is a fairly typical, if high-quality military rifle.

Heavy support machine guns function much the same way, only firing at higher rates, and requiring special power packs (or three standard ones) to power the weapon.

Most Designated Marksman's rifles are based off of a gauss cannon, firing a 1-inch diameter explosive slug at super-sonic speeds. The slug is an either armor-piecing, incendiary, anti-personnel or anti-synthetic round.

Armor-piercing rounds contain a hardened depleted-uranium rod that is propelled into the target when the explosives inside the round go off. this is sufficient to defeat all but the most powerful of vehicle armor and damage interior components.

Incendiary rounds are simple explosives, that have been designed to destroy and ignite any thing they impact. Basically, there is a large explosion that scatters a high explosive and thermate-tetroxane compound across a twenty-meter area. Those then detonate, and the combined energy can set most metals and synthetic substances on fire.

Anti-personnel rounds are slugs that act as modern-day hollow point rouds, fired at velocities high enough to penetrate most types of infantry body-armor.

Anti-synthetic rounds (also known as "robot-killers") are designed to penetrate into a synthetic's metal chassis, and scatter magnetic compounds throughout, disabling most systems and playing havoc with other. Trace chemical compounds release electricity into internal mechanisms, further damaging the synthetic.

True snipers-rifles are rare, and dmr's are usually used due to their increased versatility. Sniper rifles function the same, only more powerfully.

Anti vehicle weapons will either fire an explosive projectile, or a stream of charged particles.

Grenades function much the same as today, only with more advanced explosive compounds used inside of them.
