Somalia is one of the oldest Muslim civilizations in the world. Many ruins of centuries-old mosques still stand today. Somalia's proximity to Islam's birth on the opposite coast of the Red Sea in the 7th century eventually led to Somalia's capital city of Mogadishu being known as the city of Islam. The sultans of Somalia also built impressive palaces, forts, and castles as the region became a center of trade between China, Persia, Mediterranean Europe, northeast Africa, and Arabia.

Somalia was never colonized by European countries, only claimed. The modern Somalian state was granted independence by Italy in 1960. An ongoing civil war in Somalia, fought from 1991 to the present, has destabilized the country, destroyed existing infrastructure, shattered every level of government authority, impoverished the masses, and led to a large Somali diaspora around the world.
