The Pit

"Don't shoot!" says a familiar voice.
The General walks out of the Explorer, the badges on his uniform shining brightly from the sunlight. "Welcome, Frederick," he says. "I am glad that you could make it. For the safety of you and your men, I have decided to give you some U.S. soldiers to escort you. Though the villagers are peaceful, we do not know what you shall encounter while you are on the western side of the island. Also, we have supplied you with state of the art weaponry. You shall find them in the cargo hold."
"That's enough," says on your scientists. "What's going on here? Soldiers? Guns? What are we expecting to face, monsters?"
Anger seems to flash over the General's face, but it is gone quickly. "Just a safety issue," the General explains. "We don't know what you'll face out there."
You think you hear him mumble, "And we don't want to," but you might have been hearing things. "I guess we'll leave, then," you say, trying to prevent any further hostility. You, your scientists, and the soldiers board the plane and set off. Before long, the pilot announces that the island is in view. You look outside to see the island in full view, the ocean water gleaming from the sunlight shining on it. Suddenly, your satellite phone rings. It's the General. "Hello?" you say.
"Now that you are on that plane, I want to tell you the last bit of your assignment," says the General. "There is a Pit on the western side of the island that has the villagers frightened so badly that all activities on that side of the island are banned. We want you to check out the pit after you have talked to-"
The plane suddenly bounces, and the satellite phone goes through the window, into the sea. "Damn it!" you scream. "Damn it!"
"What's wrong?" Dameon, one of your best scientists, asks.
"I dropped my goddamn phone," you say.
"Sorry," he says and sits back in his seat.
You continue to look out the window when you notice something. The wing seems to be sparking. At first, you think its just your eyes playing tricks on you, but when it suddenly bursts into flames, you scream and run to the other side of the airplane. Dameon obviously sees it, too, because he runs for the pilot's room in the front of the plane. You follow him, but stumble as the plane jerks suddenly. The pilot's voice fills the room. "I am sorry to tell you this, but we seem to have a severe malfunction. I ask that you get to your seats and buckle yourselves in. We're going down, I repeat, we're going down."
You run to the nearest seat, but too late, you realize that you have no seatbelt. You stare out the window, waiting for your awaiting doom, but you notice that instead of hitting the ground, you fall under it, hitting something much later. Your head hits the chair in front of you, and you are knocked unconscious.
