Assault of the Sorcerer Kings

Makis drew the straw on the left, the one that was crooked in Sanums' hand. He drew the shortest straw.

"Son of a bitch!" he shouted, throwing the stick to the ground.

The rest of the men laughed in relief, glad to have the opportunity to sleep. Makis continued to curse.

The men gambled for a bit and told stories of their most daring deeds until they started to check out for the night and close their eyes.

Only Makis remained awake, sitting on a rock and staring at the fire while stroking his thin black beard. He sat there for some time, watching the flames lick at the burning wood and the sparks climbing into the night sky.

Feeling that he was about to nod off, he stood up and took a walk around the outside perimeter of the camp. They were off on the edge of the clearing, bordering with the wood. The path they had been taking was one of the lesser roads, and one of only two connections the mountain towns and villages had to the world below. The road was notorious for attacks, but Makis didn't worry too much about it. What kind of an idiot would attack a legion of knights?

He stared up at the sky in the night, taking particular note of the moon. It would be full in a few days. He had to break away from them before the full moon rose else they would know of his terrible secret.

The night passed with little incident.
