Into the Abyss
Her eye lids drop, and she is fast asleep.
"CAROLINE!" calls a familiar voice.
"Caaaa-roooo-liiiiine! Wake up! You're going to be late."
"...Mom?"
Caroline's eyes crack open slightly. The sun is brightly shining through her window.
"I'm in my room...All that was a dream? That's a bit disappointing."
Caroline arose from bed and felt her feet on the floor.
"Hm...feels like I haven't stood in days."
"Caroline, you're going to be late!"
"No I'm not. Trust me."
She took a whore's bath, hastily. The water felt good, and the soap smelled good. She could hear song birds outside the open window in the bathroom. It was so beautiful, Caroline almost cried.
Quickly she dressed. She wore black and white striped knee socks, denim shorts, a black t-shirt with a white, cartoon, bunny face, black combat boots with pink and blue and yellow flowers, and a green hooded jacket. All of her senses were kean, and appreciative of the world around her, after such a dismal dream...
Caroline packed up her things and ran out the door. She lit up a cigarette as she strolled down her street in her sun glasses, looking all sorts of mischevious.
"Hey!"
Damien, one of her best friends.
"Whats up, man? I had a crazy dream last night."
"Again?"
"This one was different..."
"You're dreams haven't bored me yet."
"Yeah, well...I dreamt I was fallin...down a well or something. It seemed to go on forever, like I had been falling for days. First thing I remember I was holding onto a rope, dangling over the hole, surrounded by the brick lining. Eventually the rope snapped and I began falling..."
"Is that it?" Damien said.
"No, it went on. I flashed back through a lot of my life while I was falling. Mostly I thought of Paul...it was so real it was strange. All these weird and horrific sensations pulsed through me."
"You need to stop thinking about that..."
"What?"
"About what happened with Paul...I know you, and you don't let things plague you like this."
"I'm trying not to, but it's difficult. We were together for so long, and it was just over in the blink of an eye. I really loves him, Damien. I know I'll get over it but I can't stop loving him..."
"Have you talked to him at all?"
"No...I wish I could."
"Why haven't you?"
"I'm too scared. I don't want to impose my pressence on him if he's happier without me. Plus when I look him in the eye..."
"What..."
"I want to cry..."
Caroline's face went still and joyless.
They approached the school.
"You know, Carry..." Damien said, with a faint intimacy in his voice.
"A lot of guys would kill to go out with you..."
"I doubt that, but even if so, none of them are Paul..."
He looked at her, Caroline knew he was thinking about something. She almost knew what, but she didn't want to think about that. That was the last thing she needed.
"Well you're still young. You're just 16,maybe you'll meet some nice guy in art school or something..."
A glimmer escaped from his eye, as he averted his gaze from her eyes to the door of the school as he opened it. As he walked through the doorway he said.
"Carry, I..."
And then Carry tripped over the brace beneath the door. damien reached to catch her, but then she woke up...
