Hall of Infinite Doors

You can see the first few rungs of the ladder all right - they look wooden and sturdily bolted to the side of the deep concrete shaft that descents eerily into the earth. A blackness engulfs the hole just a scant few feet downward, and you hear some vague noises below, whispers or blowing wind.
