Hall of Infinite Doors
You consider putting the ring back on the desk, but no opportunity arises that night. The next day is Thursday, and if you don't get it back soon the weekend will be here.
You approach her after class. She has on a nice purple top and jeans. She smiles weakly.
"Hey!"
"Hi! You're Chris, right?" she says slowly, as she begins walking down the sidewalk.
You walk with her. "Yeah. Michelle, right?"
"Yeah."
"Hey," you fumble, "I was getting together a study group for this class and I was wondering if you wanted to be part of it?"
"I'm not sure," she says. "I mostly study alone--but thanks." You feel the coldness of her shoulder.
You walk for a few seconds in silence.
"Look," she says, "I need to file something with the campus police. I better run."
"Police?" you ask. "What is it?"
"Someone took a ring from my sorority. It means a lot."
"What kind of ring?" you ask.
"It has a big sapphire surrouned by little diamonds and has my name on the inside. Ok? What are you a detective?"
"No, but I do know some people," you say trying to come up with something.
"People? What kind of people?"
"People who may know something."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, every ring has to be sold. I know some people in the community. I really don't want trouble, but I'd help you."
She perks up. "Can you ask them?! Like tonight?"
"I don't know," you reply. "I can see."
"I mean, I'd give you a reward. Anything. This means so lot to me. I need it before this weekend. I'll be at the Sigma Chi house most of tomorrow. Please?"
"Ok. I'll see." You turn and walk away.
