Secrets of the Night
Brenna saw a foot disappear around the corner leading up to the second floor. No one could have come into the house. She heard a giggle, and thought of the boy she had looked for earlier only to find an empty ally. Her mind was playing tricks on her at very inopportune times.
"Brenna, no" Evan said the words too late.
Brenna had crossed the line of salt between the kitchen and the hall. She heard the rattle of the door only a moment before the door to the basement flew open. She might have screamed and tried to run, in hindsight Brenna wouldn't remember her first response to the inky shadows that escaped from the basement. The force threw her against he wall, and established itself as a barrier between Brenna and the kitchen.
Through the darkness Brenna could see the shapes of Lily and Evan moving. They were kids, younger than she was by several years. She wanted them to have a chance to go to Paris someday- she hoped they'd stay put. Brenna felt the dark wrap around her like a familiar nightmare. She thought of the battle in her grandmother's yard, and then she pictured her mother. Thoughts passed in and out of her consciousness as she moved back away from the darkness. She thought she was going in the direction of the living room until she hit something solid. Brenna glanced over her shoulder letting her focus roam from the monster before her to see what was at her back.
Guthrie stood there, the man from the hospital, was Jason nearby she wondered? He smiled at her and his breath smelled of blood, but he was mostly human- much more so than the monster before her. So it came as a complete surprise when he lifted her and physically hurled her into the darkness.
