Secrets of the Night

"How is he?" Evan asked quietly as Brenna slid into the driver's seat of Jason's Range Rover.

"He's in quarantine," Brenna answered fastening her seatbelt and examining the building. The second floor windows were covered in black curtains. It reminded her of the holocaust and that seemed creepy.

"Quarantine?" Evan sounded as incredulous as she felt. "He should be in ICU getting real care…"

Brenna put the car in reverse and set the tires skidding. Evan was right, Jason was not where he should be… but if it were possible she would change that. She wasn't going to leave a soldier behind. Jason would have laughed at that thought. She missed his friendship.

"What do you think about breaking and entering?" Brenna asked raising a brow to Evan.

"I only do it if I know I won't get caught."

"Right, good policy. Where's the library?"

Evan gave directions, and the pair spent all day looking at hospital floor layout plans. It only occurred to Brenna sometime after lunch that Evan's presence might have been required in a school building somewhere. He grinned boyishly at his truant antics. It felt good to have a solid person with her, and besides that, she didn't really know how to do everything alone.

"So, we'll arrive at 8:00 PM, and slip into the restroom on the first floor, up through the ceiling tiles…" Brenna retraced the plan for her own benefit Evan had it down pat.

Brenna and Evan collected supplies during the afternoon- this wasn't an escape mission it was a check in mission. Why she felt it was so urgent she didn't know- something about what Nurse Nancy had thought.
