Secrets of the Night

"No?" the boy stopped and looked at her, his small body that had been in constant motion since his arrival was eerily still. A line marred his smooth forehead. He waited for her to explain.

Brenna covered her eyes with her too small hands. "It's wrong."

"Brenna, what's happening?" the boy asked concerned, his voice held the panicked notes of pain.

Brenna felt the pain roll out of his voice and onto herself. She looked down at her hands they were expanding as all children's hands do. Except rather than slowly suffering the pains of growth, Brenna was reliving them all at one time. Beside her, Auberon was curled in on himself, as if he too were experiencing the pains. Brenna shook her head against it, fighting the pain.

"What's happening?" this time Auberon's voice was different, not the child's tone she had always known. She looked into his eyes, and the dark orbs were like drowning pools.
Brenna felt the scream rising from the depths of her soul, but the pain was so intense she didn't hear the sound.
