Secrets of the Night

After breakfast while Brenna got dressed, Jason went out to his Range Rover and grabbed a portable cd player he had brought along to help pass the time. Brenna sat in front of her little vanity, it had been made for a child, and felt a million times smaller than it had when last she had sat at it. She looked at her reflection, studying irises so many people found so strange. Her eyes were lavendar, and they made the pupil appear a dark purple even though everyone knows eyes have black centers. Today the light caught them making them look more vividly purple than usual. She made a mental note to ask Jason if he saw the change.

Downstairs she heard Something Corporate blast through the floor separating her from her yummy bedfellow. Brenna glanced at the floor fondly, he was really a cute one. Something reflected in the mirror caught her eye, and she turned to look over her shoulder. There was of course nothing behind her, except a small table with a dusty old porcelain tea set. Brenna shook her head and returned to her reflection.

"Hey babe?" Jason called from the base of the stairs.

"Coming!" Brenna returned and tossed her boring black hair up into a clip. She looked crappy wearing an old paint shirt and torn jogging pants. Jason wouldn't care though, he knew she polished up nice. She flounced down the stairs and found him standing at the top step of the basement. "What are you doing?"

"Well, I thought we could start checking out what storage is available." Jason explained his flashlight bobbling around in the pitch darkness. "I was going to ask if you knew where the light switch is."

"Grandma always kept the basement locked." Brenna said, her heart pounding with the panic she had always associated with the dark basement.

"That's so you wouldn't fall silly," Jason shook his head, "These stairs are too steep for old people, and too steep for little children."

Brenna squinted into the darkness expecting something to come flying out of the depths. Of course nothing actually did come flying at her. Taking a deep breath she turned away from the basement nibbling her lip wondering where the light switch would be.

"Maybe at the bottom of the stairs on a string?" Brenna offered. "I don't know, we never went in the basement. It kind of feels wrong to mess with it."
