The Pattern

Everyone turned as one to look around at the doors. There was an envelope taped to each of five doors. Below each envelope carved deep in wood and painted cheerful colors was a name. One for each of the five children, for a moment they stood looking at one another all thinking separately that someone had planned far in advance for their arrival, expecting them to accept, and they wondered what would have happened if they had not submitted.

Hannah was the first to move toward the door with her name on it, she took a deep breath and removed the envelope. There was a small sound of friction as the tape fought to hold to the door. Hannah didn't open her envelope, but went to each door in the pentagon shaped living space and removed all of the envelopes then redistributed them.

"Shall we open them together?" She asked in a voice that shook slightly. She hadn't forgotten the letter that had started it all. The letter that would come to change her world. It had felt like days or weeks even sense she had looked at it and checked yes. Now as she held her envelope in suspense she wondered if she had made the wrong choice.

"Let's," Rosie said and ripped open her envelope hastily.
