The Pattern

August 8, 5:43 AM Hannah woke screaming. We thought at first that she was suffering a night terror. Her body was wracked with sweat, and her eyes were wild. Sister Tara thought she had been overtaken by a demon. Her words were indistinct at first. Wordless screams woke many of the other children. Father Dietrich was summoned at 6:10 AM when she would not be consoled. We were unfamiliar with her behavior, her mother had dropped her off only a month prior, and we were at a loss as to how she should be managed.

Her screams subsided at 7:30 AM, and in a soft voice she relayed to Father Dietrich the cause of her horror. She claimed to have witnessed her mother's death. She described in detail, the bloodlines running down the sides of a porcelain white bathtub caked in mold. She spoke of a razor blade, and described a floor littered with syringes. No child should see things like that in his or her sleep. We thought at first that she had been exposed to too much television. She stopped speaking after telling her tale, and would not respond verbally to any stimulus.

The officer arrived the next day to relay the demise of Ms. Reeves. He spoke with Father Dietrich, and every detail matched up with what Hannah had described. Sister Mary requested that no report be filed for Hannah's sake, but Mother insisted. The child is blessed and cursed a double-edged sword of knowledge.

Notes:
Hannah began speaking again on October 31. Her first word since going silent was "Halloween." We project she might indeed be a devil's child, though her nature does deny it.
