Xeresgate

You sneak as far around the old man's perimeter as you can, unsure of what might be his true intentions. You hear him call, "Hello? Hello?" before heaving a sigh.

"Heh," you think to yourself. "I probably just thwarted whatever he had in mind!"

You continue north for a good while, slowly making your way around the whole of Xeresgate, and begin to make your way around the outer wall of Xeres Castle. At the edge of the northwest forest, you stop to admire the gleaming spires of the inner keep of Xeres Castle and wonder what it must be like to live in such splendor...

You've hardly looked at it a moment, when a stick breaks under your foot, tripping a clever trap which douses you in rotting animal blood. As you begin to wonder whether this is meant to transform you into wolf bait, your question is answered as an arrow whistles into a very fortunately-placed branch near your chest! You stumble backward and run into the forest as more arrows land at your feet and in the surrounding trees, shot by the expert archers atop the outer walls, a mere hundred yards away. As you run, it dawns on you that perhaps Xeres Castle has been assaulted by invisible invaders before, and that made the placing of those traps by King Michael necessary. You perhaps may never realize how fortunate you are to still be alive.

You continue north, being sure to stay well clear of the outer walls of Xeres Castle! After about a day's journey, you come to a small cottage in the foothills of the Xeres Mountains. You are hungry like you've never been before, and there appear plumes of smoke from the cottage's chimney. Perhaps they are kind here and might offer a vagabond sustenance.

What will you do?
