Hall of Infinite Doors

You hire Jessica. She turns out to be a tremendous employee. She's diligent, reliable, and makes your life more enjoyable on the side. For a while you're concerned that she feels coerced into starting your mornings off right. But then you realize that she'll come in whenever she's feeling bored, and that she derives great pleasure from your touch too. And, one day, when she smiles at you as you discover her clinging to the maintenance guy, you're sure she enjoys it too.

You're working hard in your new position as office manager pro tem. You want to make your job a permanent position. Toward the end of your first month, Sylvia, the head of HR, knocks on your office door. You stuff Jessica beneath your desk and let Sylvia in.

"Hey, Charlie."

"Hey." You shake hands across your desk and she sits down.

"We typically have an end of summer party. It needs to be big. Last year we had it at the beach, and it was a great success. This year someone suggested having it a couple days in the mountains. However, some don't like camping, so I wouldn't do that. Others suggested having a huge party at night here in the office. Maybe you could have a pool party, but it would have to be better than the beach outing. I'd like you to start organizing it. We need to do this within a month."

"A month?" You feel Jessica sucking on your fingers below your desk.

"A month. Sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I know you're up to it."

"I'll get right on it."

Sylvia rises and shakes your hand again.

"I'll check back with you in a couple weeks. As I said, we'll give you a good budget for this, depending on what you decide to do."
