The Great Conflict

You quietly walk up the stone steps of the temple. You can tell this was recently constructed out of available materials because of the variety of what was used to construct it. No metals or plastics exist in the architecture, just bricks borrowed from other structures, stones, and wood from the surrounding forest. You can hear a cleric preaching to the parishioners deeper inside. When you reach the top of the staircase you can see many wooden benches all full of peasants with their gazes fixed on the cleric standing in the center. He stands at a podium and preaches loudly of damnation and victory over the infidels. He tells them of the good days to come and the powers god has granted them to fight the holy war. Surprisingly, the cleric makes eye contact with you yet does not change his actions. He continues preaching, and when a proper point in his sermon is reached he says, "There is an infidel among us here today. In this very room! Look behind you my children and you shall see the enemy!"

The crowd turns their heads and there is a simultaneous gasp when they see you. The cleric continues, "He has come to destroy us and all that we have worked for, but do not fear for god has granted me the power to smite him!" As soon as he finishes speaking he lifts his hand up and a blue aura surrounds him. He now has a blessed shield protecting him. You now have two options. The peasant folk are running out of the other church exits trying to escape. You may mow them all down with your plasma enhanced assault rifle or ignore them allowing them to escape in order to deal with the cleric immediately. Which shall you choose?
