Doors and More Doors

"Can I get some chips?" you say. I really don't know why you chose to lie to him, but hey, it's your story. "Cheps?" he asks, his mind not able to digest the sentence you laid out for him. "Yeah, chips," you say cheerfully. Johnny shakes his head confusedly, and it becomes clear that he wants you to elaborate. "Like... the food..." you start. "You eat them... like with your mouth... you don't know chips?"

Johnny surprisingly doesn't take offense to any of this, rather just stands there staring at you intently. It's almost like a staring match for half a minute as his brain computes what you just said, and then he says, "Nuh uh." Then, he goes behind the register, pulls out a bag of something, and hands it to you. "Food," he says, with perfect enunciation for once. I guess food isn't a really hard word to pronounce. You can't do much to alter it, can you?
