Humanities weakness.

You snap to the right and sprint toward the massive cave. It appears to be carved into the side of a mountain, its entrance nothing more than a small gap. Behind you, your friend charges forward, his body contorting unnaturally. His limbs stretch, growing long and muscular—far larger than his legs. Abandoning his usual gait, he begins using his grotesquely extended arms to propel himself forward, his deep purple skin glistening under the moonlight. He lets out a horrifying roar.

The mountain looms ahead as you race toward the cave’s entrance. You drop to the ground, frantically army crawling through the narrow opening. Behind you, your friend reaches for you, his monstrous hands clawing at the rock, trying to destroy the cave and bury you alive.

You make it to the other side, swallowed by darkness. You can’t see a thing.

In the distance, a sliver of moonlight seeps through a crack in the cave’s ceiling, illuminating a lifeless body. The dim glow reveals the gruesome sight of a dead cave diver, his intestines spilling from his torn-open abdomen, his left arm completely ripped off.

You step closer, kneeling beside the corpse. A foul stench fills your nostrils, and you gag before vomiting onto the cold stone floor.

Your eyes land on a bloodied note lying next to the body. You pick it up.

Shaking, you begin to read:

“That thing is no animal. It’s no human. Something lurks in this horrid cave… and it’s bloodthirsty. It wants us dead! It wants us dead! HELP ME!!”

A chill runs down your spine. You glance around, your breath quickening. Then, you spot a flashlight clipped to the cave diver’s shredded shirt. You grab it, flicking it on.

It works.

You stand up, cautiously stepping forward. As you move deeper into the cave, the silence is broken.

Mumbling.

Falling rocks.

Do you investigate the noise or keep moving?
