Max begins to run in a zigzag motion, ducking and dodging around bells, hoping to force the Ghost to slow down and follow.

Before he reaches the silver bell, Max sees that the Ghost ignored the chase and flew forward to guard the silver bell. It appears that they haven't spotted him, so Max still has the element of surprise on his side.
